That winter, at the time when Saint francis lived in the city of Gubbio, there appeared in the region a wolf who was terriblly ferocious and who attacked peope and animals.
Francis decided to face the wolf. He had always managed to talk to animals ; the birds listened to his words, but what of the merciles wolves, he who had never succeded in speaking to his own father ?
Francis asked for God's protection. The ferocious wolf, fascinated by Francis's voice, became as gentle as a lamb and from then on lived in peace with the people of Gubbio.
